Environment:  Visual Studio 2008 Pro, Vista Home Premium SP1, NORMA 3 March Release, Dell 1525 2ghz laptop with 4GB memory

Task: I built a simple one fact model and tried to print it.

Action 1: Click on File>Page Setup - Result  "Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has stopped working"
The debugger reported "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in devenv.exe [1164]

Action 2: Click on File>Print - Result  "Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has stopped working"
The debugger reported "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in devenv.exe [3372]

Any clues anyone?

I don't have any problem open these dialogs. Are you able to open them for other document types on your installation?

NORMA has exactly 0 lines of custom code for printing. We simply pick up the base implementation from DSLTools, which prints the current diagram. There is a future (but currently unscheduled) workitem to allow other printing options (print selection, print multiple selected diagrams, etc)

 If you could send me a callstack I might be able to look into it more.

Other programs print normally.
When I load a small model and select "Page Setup", VS 2008 just crashes and restarts.
When I select "Print" I get a dialog box with a message (see below). Then when I debug, I get the output shown below.

1. Can you page setup and print a normal text document?
2. Can you page setup and print a 'Class Designer' document (create a C# project, right click on Program.cs (or any .cs file) in the solution explorer, and choose 'View Class Diagram')
3. If not, how far do you get in the following debugging process
• Start a new instance of Visual Studio
• Tools/Attach to Process (attach managed code to the devenv.exe with your .orm file open)
• In the Tools/Options dialog, choose the Debugger page and turn off the 'Just My Code' option (you will want to turn this option back on after this exercise)
• In the Debug/Windows/Breakpoints toolwindow, use the 'New' dropdown to 'Break at Function...'
• Add a breakpoint at function 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Modeling.Shell.DesignerPrintManager.ShowPageSetupDialog' (without the quotes)
• Add a breakpoint at 'Neumont.Tools.Modeling.Shell.MultiDiagramDocView.get_CurrentDiagram'
• Now, switch back to the other process and attempt to open the 'Page Setup' dialog. You should get two hits in get_CurrentDiagram, followed by one in ShowPageSetupDialog, followed by a third in get_CurrentDiagram with ShowPageSetupDialog still on the stack (you can view the callstack toolwindow with Debug/Windows/Callstack)
• If you're getting this far, then you should get several more calls to get_CurrentDiagram. Please record the callstack for the last one you get.

The behavior I'm expecting here is that both Class Designer and ORM Designer fail/succeed together. They should be basically be running the same code. I'm sorry I can't debug this here, but I'm not getting a reproducible (or even one) crash on my machine. Might be a Vista issue (the corporate image is still XP). If you have a VS2005 install as well, I'd like to know if you get consistent behavior. -Matt

Yes- I created a text file in VS 2008 and both functions work normally.

Partly: Page setup still crashes VS 2008 but Print works normally.

With the ORM template Page setup and print both fail as previously described.

I'll look into your debugging sequence later.

I have now tested the latest NORMA release with VS 2005 under XP Pro and there are no print problems.

The VS 2008 community site mentions instability and some folks there say thay have reverted to VS 2005.
So it looks to me as though the cause of the problem is something to do with VS 2008 and maybe Vista.

I need NORMA to be operational on my Vista laptop so I'll try VS2005 with Vista and see what happens.
