• Re: Questions about combining Rings and Subtypes in nORMa

Hi Clifford, Thanks for your contribution. As a suggestion, if you added a diagram to your post, this would help people who don't understand ORM as well as you do to more easily understand your point. You can add a diagram by firstly creating a .png file and then uploading it using the "Add/Update" button on the reply options ...

  • Re: Formalizing object models using predicate logic

Hi Brian, I'm using Firefox 3.1 and I see the same problem. I wonder if it is due to what is described as being "due to Firefox's own present limitations in displaying such characters." on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5235 This add-on is about adding UTF-8 capability to Firefox. • Re: Formalizing object models using predicate logic

Hi Antonio, I'm no expert in fuzzy logic but I have a hard time in conceptualising the idea of using ORM for fuzzy stuff. Note that on this site the acronym ORM means "Object-Role Modeling" not "Object Relational Mapping" One of the strengths of ORM is that ORM is for specifying things in a precise way that is ...

  • Re: ORM for Data Warehouses and Data Marts - Useful?

Hi Tom, I'm curious as to your opinion on what it is that is the root cause of your problem. "Just because the data structure is not 3NF does not make data itself incorrect." When data structures are not properly normalized, then there is a risk of anomalies creeping into the database. If the application code does not ...

  • Re: ORM for Data Warehouses and Data Marts - Useful?

Hi Tom, Well ORM certainly has the capability to do what you want, however, making it happen is a different story. In my experience, the "how to make it happen" problem has nothing to do with ORM's capabilities and everything to do with overcoming things like vested interests, hubris, fear, the psychology of sunk ...

  • Re: ORM for Data Warehouses and Data Marts - Useful?

Hi Thomas, Yes - ORM can be used for data warehouse work. Pages 836 to 843 of Terry's new book (The Big Brown Book) cover this topic. (Chapter 16.2) These pages cover issues such as data consistency, temporal constructs, denormalisation for performance, terminology, the three main approaches, cubes with more than three ...

  • Re: VS 2005 & VS 2008 - ORM file compatibility

Hi Matt, After uninstalling & reinstalling NORMA & PLiX on the Vista machine , I can now open the file in Vista.and the relational mapping features are there. Just as it says on the tin! Thus I categorize this as "Problem gone away!" Thanks for your help. Ken

Hi Brian Good points that you make. Here are the configurations of the two machines on which I am running NORMA. 1: Dell Precison 390 with 4GB RAM and two 74GB 10000 RPM disks running in Raid 1 configuration. XP Pro with Visual Studio 2005 Professional and the latest version of NORMA (as posted to the library on 9 June). 2: Dell 1525 ...

On my Vista Home Premium/ VS 2008 installation, I created a new fact and then tried to turn on the relational mapping. The image below shows you the result. When I cheked the relational ... option, the system crashed. Well Sherlock, we seem to be making progress.

  • Re: VS 2005 & VS 2008 - ORM file compatibility

Here is the procedure I just followed: 1: Create a new .orm model (Windows XP / VS 2005) 2: Save 3: Close down VS 2005 4: Re-open the file All OK so far. 5: Save new .orm model to a memory stick 6: Plug the memory stick into a Vista Home Premium/ VS 2008 machine 7: Try to open file 8: Error below appeared. 9: Plugged the ...
