can i use NORMA without VS?

    Hi,

i dont have Visual Studio software.

im currently using MS Visio 2005, and i have C# VS 2007 Express Edition.

    2 questions:

    1. will i be able to use NORMA, or must i buy VS.Net to use it?
    2. i NORMA better than VISIO? if it does - in what aspect?

    thanks a lot,

    rolevimo

NORMA is an add-on to Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008.
So you need either Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008 to run NORMA.

is NORMA better than VISIO? if it does - in what aspect?
VisioModeler implements ORM 1 whereas NORMA
    implements ORM 2.
ORM 2 diagrams are smaller than ORM 1 diagrams and ORM 2 also contains new features.
You can download an "ORM1 - ORM 2"  comparison from the NORMA section of the Library. The document is called the "ORM 2 Symbol Glossary".

VisioModeler will never be extended and it does not run under Vista.
NORMA is still being extended and already has many features that are not in VisioModeler.
However, NORMA does not yet have some of the VisioModeler features such as extensive reporting.

Currently you need at least the standard version of VS2005 or VS2008 to run NORMA. We are hoping that Microsoft will add one module that we requested to the free Express version of VS that would allow NORMA to run on that, but so far no decision has been made whether that will happen.

In addition to VisioModeler, which is freely available, the ORM Source Model solution in a high end version of Visio provides good support for ORM 1. As Ken indicated, NORMA supports the ORM 2 notation, which is significantly better than ORM 1. NORMA offers some features not found in the other products (e.g. mapping to non-relational targets, truly live error detection, context diagrams etc.) but its current relational schema generation lags a little behind the other products in terms of completeness of constraint code generated, incremental support (e.g. update scripts) and the number of DBMSs for which we provide reverse engineering. That said, we are actively working on major enhancements to NORMA and hopefully you should see some of these deficiencies addressed in the near future.

    Cheers

    Terry
