• Re: In which step should artificial identities (IDs) be introduced if not mentioned by domain experts?

I can't answer the question for everyone, but in my personal work I tend to introduce artificial identifiers almost immediately. When I'm modeling I like to make everything "work" as much as possible as it's being created. This behavior is HEAVILY influenced by NORMA, since it gives red error messages if your entity types ...

  • Re: Support for Visual Studio 2010

My guess is the DSL model tools made some significant changes that are breaking the code generation. Either that, or there's been a gopher infestation in the back yard. I might not be up to speed on the project any more, but I'm pretty handy with a .22! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out.

Thanks, Matt! I certainly understand how you need money to feed the family, at least until the first crop starts coming in. ;-) In the meantime I'll do like Jeremy does and just run it from a virtual machine. Thank you for the rapid response, and for all the hard work you continue to put in to NORMA. -- Tyler p.s. Lucky!! Our peach and ...

  • Re: Support for Visual Studio 2010

So I did a rather silly thing yesterday... I installed VS2010 and deleted '08, then discovered that NORMA isn't working for '10 yet! Oops... Kind of a rookie mistake for someone who's teaching the class this quarter! Matt, I know you're working hard on it. Is there a beta yet for a poor soul who doesn't want to reinstall ...

  • Re: Common Models

I like your idea for the details document describing the model, and posted one for my talent agency model. Since I'm not used to posting my writing in a public forum (aside from Facebook updates), the style is probably lacking polish. Don't be afraid to critique-- feedback is necessary for improvement. One of these days I may want to write ...

  • Talent Agency

I just posted the Talent Agency model in the OSM section of the Library. The details document contains screen shots of all the pages, as well as the logical model and the SQL. The NORMA model is also available. I'll post other models as I create their respective documentation, but for now at least the ball is rolling. You'll notice that ...

  • Talent Agency Details Document

A model of a talent agency and the audition process. I worked as a secretary for a local talent agency in 2002, then started doing their website as I taught myself PHP and MySQL. After redoing the website once, I turned it over to another developer. Afterward, I decided to start modeling my "ideal" scenario that would optimize the work ...

  • Re: Open Source Models

Oh, but didn't you know software development was rife with TLAs (Three-Letter Acronyms)? The blog could be interesting. My style is a bit rambling, so I may end up scaring off more people than it attracts. On the other hand, it would tend to make my posts shorter if I was putting the domain and development commentary somewhere else. I'm ...

  • Common Models

First of all, thanks to Ken for setting up this new section of the boards! In my part time I enjoy making websites, and very often the projects I want to do are for specialized domains. Over the years I've done various (amateur) models of climate zones, a talent agency, message boards, microarrays for proteomic expression, and numerous other ...
